Born and raised in New York City, Dean Hunsaker subsequently resided in the suburban town of Stony Brook in Long Island, where he eventually attended the State University and majored in social sciences. He then migrated to California to attend graduate school in sociology at the University of California. Upon earning an M.A. at U.C. Santa Barbara, he transferred to U.C. Berkeley and began doctoral work, but left academia to pursue a career in visual arts. After a year in the M.F.A. program at SF State University he left and spent the next 25 years as a graphic designer in corporate settings in such varied fields as architecture, education, urban planning, library information systems and civil engineering. He then returned to painting full time in his studio in Berkeley.
